Symptoms of Malaria

Malaria:

The symptoms characteristic of malaria include fever, chills, muscle aches, and headache. Cycles of chills, fever, and sweating that recur every 1, 2 or 3 days are typical. There can sometimes be vomiting, diarrhea, coughing and yellowing (jaundice) of the skin and whites of the eyes. The treatment for malaria depends upon the geographic area where a person has been infected with the disease. Different areas of the world have malaria types that are resistant to certain medications. Malaria is a disease which can be transmitted to people of all ages. It is caused by parasites of the species Plasmodium that are spread from person to person through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Malaria is a parasitic disease that involves infection of the red blood cells.

Many women whose families are threatened by malaria cannot afford insecticidetreated mosquito nets. So Freedom from Hunger has convinced manufacturers and distributors to provide the nets at a substantially reduced cost (about $4 per net). Freedom from Hunger also arranged for local sources of appropriate and reliable anti-malarial drugs to be provided at reasonable prices to individuals when the disease strikes. Because Freedom from Hunger's Malaria Initiative is layered onto a self-financing microcredit program, women gain sustainable access to credit to build home-based business, earning money to buy nets and pay for health services.

In normal circumstances it's the female mosquito of the Anopheles species that bites someone and then passes on a parasite by the name of Plasmodium. Once this parasite is inside of you it travels in your blood till it reaches the liver, and from there it will enter the blood stream again where it attacks the red blood cells that feed oxygen around our bodies. Many of the diseases that affect the human body today are bad if not terrible. The last two decades have seen a lot of publicity about Aids with television coverage, and pop concerts yet Malaria goes by without a mention. Each year it is estimated that over 600 million people and children will suffer from Malaria, and at a guess the death rate is something up to 3 million.

Incubation periods for each type of malaria may vary if a person is taking infection-fighting medication or because some immunity from a previous infection exists. In regions where malaria is prevalent, residents may carry the disease but may not exhibit its symptoms due to an immunity or semi-immunity to it. The severity of symptoms can also vary depending on a person's general state of health and immune system. The time between a mosquito bite and the onset of symptoms is usually 7 to 21 days, but some types of malaria parasites take much longer to make their way through the bloodstream. When infection occurs through blood transfusion, which is very rare, the time of the onset of symptoms depends on the number of parasites transmitted through the transfusion.
