The Sad Saga Of An Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown Toenail:

An ingrown toenail is one of the banes of man's existence. If you've ever lived with one, then chances are you will never forget the constant throbbing ache it brings.

It really doesn't matter if you are a boy or a girl, a man or a woman, we all are susceptible to an ingrown toenail. One of the biggest challenges is that the aching pain and throbbing of that toe can nearly drive you to your knees at times.

Here's the good and bad news. An ingrown toenail is a rather common foot condition. It happens when the pointed edge of the nail digs its way into the soft fleshy part of the skin of the toe. Man, that just sounds painful reading those words!

One of the first symptoms of an ingrown toenail is the pain, redness and edema found along the edge of the skin where the nail is pushing into the tender toe skin. This happens because as the nail itself is growing, the sharp edge of the nail decides to bury itself in the side of the toe. Good grief! What is that toenail thinking!!

Most commonly an ingrown toenail happens to the big toe, or in fancy words, the great toe. It is also possible that the ingrown toenail is so bad that an infection occurs. Now talking about no fun at all...well a toenail infection from an ingrown toenail is absolutely no fun!

If you decide to ignore your ingrown toenail, you could be making a very bad decision. Often times, you can treat your ingrown toenail all by yourself. But if you decide to ignore it, then it could develop an infection and then you may have to have a surgical intervention in order to combat the resulting infection.

However, if the pain from the toenail is severe or spreading, then you should see your physician for her help to relieve the pain of the ingrown toenail.

If you are a diabetic or if there is clear evidence that an infection is present, then it is important that you seek medical care first. This is not the time to try and treat the ingrown nail yourself. Your health is too important.

An ingrown toenail requires intervention. It is not a condition to be ignored thinking that it will just get better all by itself. Wrong! It doesn't really matter whether you fix it yourself or if you have to have the help of your physician, somebody has to deal with the toe!

Ingrown toenail treatment is a must. Think about it...dealing with the ingrown nail will help you to relieve the pain and hopefully avoid any infection from the wayward nail.
