Myth 1: Only teenagers have acne.
Contrary to the commonly held view that acne is a problem almost exclusively affecting hormonal teenagers, it is, in actual fact, experienced, at some level, by around 1 in 4 of 25-44 year old adults around the world.
That figure can be further broken down by gender to show that approximately 54% of adult females are affected at some stage in their lives and approximately 40% of adult males. So quite clearly it is not a problem purely affecting our young people.
Myth 2: Acne is caused by diet.
Lots of in-depth scientific research has not established a link between diet and acne. In other words, food does not cause acne. Yes that's right, not even chocolate, nor french fries, nor even pizza!
Now before you celebrate this fact too much by going on a junk food bender, just be aware that several acne sufferers have reported in the past that although these foods weren't the initial cause of their acne, they feel that they certainly haven't helped, and I would tend to agree.
My advice would be to avoid those foods where possible not just from an acne point of view but for the sake of your overall wellbeing. Eating a balanced diet always makes sense. But if you are on a suitable course of acne treatment, the food you take should not have a major influence.
Myth 3: Acne is caused by poor hygiene.
This is one of the myths surrounding acne that causes me the most annoyance. The reason being that those who believe it are likely to embark on a process of rigorous face cleansing and scrubbing which will actually accentuate your acne problem.
Acne is not caused by dirt or surface skin oils. Although excess oils, flaky skin and a day's collection of dust on the skin looks unsightly, scrubbing the face by hand is NOT the way to deal with it. Vigorous washing and scrubbing will actually irritate the skin and make acne worse. The best approach to hygiene and acne is this: Gently wash your face twice a day with a mild soap and pat dry with a towel. This, in conjunction with the correct acne treatment, should solve the problem.
Myth 4: Acne is caused by stress.
Stress in itself, whether from pressures at work or pressures at home is not an important factor in acne. The problem might arise when you are given drugs by your doctor to help combat the stress and acne may be one of the side effects. If you think you may have acne related to a drug prescribed for stress or depression, you should consult your physician.
Myth 5: Acne is just a cosmetic disease.
Yes, acne does affect your appearance and is in no way a serious threat to a person's physical health. However, acne can cause sufferers a lot of emotional anguish to the extent where it can ruin their lives.
Myth 6: You just have to let acne run its course.
The truth is, acne can be cleared up. If the acne products you have tried haven't worked, try one of the Highly Recommended Products you will find on our website (see link below). They have been proven to work so don't despair, help is at hand!
Myth 7: Sun bathing improves acne.
Again there is no evidence from recent research to suggest that sunlight improves acne. Sunlight can actually do more harm than good as it leads to early ageing and increases your risk of skin cancer. Many medications used to treat acne can actually make your skin more sensitive to ultraviolet light.
Myth 8: There is nothing you can do about scarring.
There are actually many ways to treat scarring, but without getting into detail about those here, there's one sure method of preventing or limiting the extent of scarring. That is to treat acne itself early and effectively, for as long as necessary, with the correct product.
Acne is not an infection but rather a skin disorder caused by a combination of factors including hormones.
Myth 10: Sex can lead to acne.
This is an age-old myth. Although the sex hormone testosterone is a major cause of acne, whether or not you engage in any sexual act has absolutely no bearing on acne and certainly doesn't cause it.
So there you have it. These 10 myths are just that : MYTH. If you have fallen into the trap of believing any of these yourself in the past, wipe them from your memory and instead start to fill your head with actual facts about acne and the range of excellent natural products available to deal with it.
