ADHD Without Hyperactivity

ADD:

When a person has the habit of floating or drifting in a specific environment, they may be diagnosed with inattentive ADHD or ADHD without hyperactivity. Generally, these people are not hyperactive; instead, they are regarded as having problems with hypoactivity. Those who suffer from hypoactivity, are the complete opposite of those who have hyperactivity. Essentially, they are under active, having little to no ability to remain active.

Adults and Children who suffer from inattentive ADD generally become over stimulated within any environment and have a hard time transitioning from impulse to action. Typically, people with ADHD without hyperactivity can only perform one function at a time, if asked to do more than one task at any given moment, tend to become overwhelmed by the prospect.

What is worse, is that the people around the person suffering from this type of ADD tend to underestimate the suffered, believe they are intelligent. Within our world, intelligence is often defined by the amount of time it takes to process anything. However, those with ADD are often distracted and do not process things in the same amount of time. For a person with inattentive ADD, problems with fogginess, integrating ideas, and stimuli both externally and internally, create the illusion that the person is intelligent.

However, what many people do not realize is that just because a person succeeds in the academic world that they do not also suffer from inattentive ADD. While they may not have what is called the cognitive inefficiency issue, they do still have a problem. They will likely spend a greater amount of time on academics and less time in other areas.

Disorganization is the most commonly noticed attribute in those suffering from ADHD without hyperactivity. If the person often has messy handwriting, a messy bedroom, or a messy desk area, these could all be signs of a person suffering from inattentive ADD. In order for these to be considered, the issues must be severe to chronic.

Another signal of inattentive ADD, are issues in dealing with other in a social setting. Generally, small talk or social interaction rules are troubling to the person and they tend to withdraw from these situations. To other people, it may seem that the person is extremely shy and view them as awkward, unaware of how they should act when with the person.

People with Inattentive ADD often become easily burnt out in over stimulating environments. They become extremely tired and stressed when faced with these situations. You will find that those suffered from Inattentive ADD need some quality alone time daily to recharge and regroup.

Many times ADHD without hyperactivity is under diagnosed for many different reasons. First off, the symptoms that go along with this type of ADD can mean other things as well, therefore, inattentive ADD is not the first thing that pops up with any person, physicians, parents, or teachers. The first diagnosis will usually be anxiety or depression, which goes along with inattentive ADD, and usually tends to last throughout the lifetime of the sufferer. It is a long and drawn out process of helping a person with inattentive ADD have a productive and healthier life.
